Se conocieron y formaron el trío en Nueva York, son aún hoy los grandes nombres del bolero y del romanticismo. Los tres miembros originales fueron Chucho Navarro y Alfredo Gil, ambos de México, y Hernando Avilés de Puerto Rico. Los tres tocaban la guitarra y compartían el papel de vocalistas.
